Hawkers of Naira Currency arrested by CBN




Resolved to destroy the unlawful offers of Nigeria's money, men of the Nigeria Police and authorities of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have captured five people in Ondo State.


The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Ondo State Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, unveiled the capture of the suspects in an announcement issued yesterday.

Joseph said the clampdown on the Naira merchants and dealers was depended on the CBN's Act, Section 20 and 21 that make it a culpable offense for any individual to bird of prey, deal or generally exchange the Naira notes, coins or some other note issued by the bank.

The PPRO said the suspects involving people were captured at different parts of the state amid a strike completed by officers of Ondo State Command and CBN authorities.

"A substantial total of cash comprising of different groups was recuperated from the suspects. Examinations have just started on the issue to determine the source or generally of the new Naira notes.

"The Nigeria Police and the CBN will proceed with this clampdown on the culprits of this offense, or, in other words the CBN Act 2007, to a correctional facility term at the very least a half year or to a fine at the very least N50,000.00 or both.

"We guarantee you that the captured people would be charged to court when the examinations concerning the issue are closed", he said.

He said the demonstrations of showering the naira notes at events, dirtying and composing on it, crushing it, and additionally peddling and offering of the nation's money notes, are maltreatment of the Naira and are deserving of the law.

He in this way, spoke to the general population to cease from mishandling the naira as it is one of the images of our national personality.
